Growing up in a war-torn region of Burma, Htoo never had the opportunity to learn how to draw or express artistic creativity. He was beaten many times in class by his teacher when caught drawing in his notebooks. After surviving the ethnic genocide in Burma, he was forced to leave his family and arrived in Thailand in 1999. While there he met and became inspired by an artist by the name of Saw Kennedy in the refugee camp and began studying under him from 2005-2007. He was able to come to the United States through refugee services in June of 2008 and a year later began drawing classes at Montgomery County Community College. He has been in a handful of exhibitions in both Thailand and here in the United States. He remains active in the arts although he doesn’t consider himself an “artist”, but rather describes himself merely as a person who is passionate about the arts and what they have to offer.
