October – November 2015 Artist in Residence
Alex Hall’s vast imagination shines through her boldly colorful acrylic painting style. A large body of her work includes anthropomorphic caricatures based off of bar patrons she observed as a bartender in college. In her “Drinking Frog” and “Zoo Nightlife” series, Hall paints overindulgent animals that regard viewers in playful, sarcastic way. Additionally, the Indiana-based artist paints still lifes and animal portraits.
Growing up, Hall’s notebooks and homework assignments were filled with whimsical drawings. “In my wake, I leave behind sketched-on napkins and doodle-ridden papers”, she remarks. While art always played a part in her life as a way to reduce stress and escape the doldrums of life, Hall didn’t attempt painting until graduating college with degrees in Political Science and Slavic Languages and Literature from Indiana University, Bloomington in 2010. As she prepared to attend medical school the following fall, her brother offered to buy every painting she had produced and reserved a solo show for her at a local restaurant. Since the show, Alex abandoned medical school and has pursued life as a working artist since.
The self-taught artist’s infectious, generous and outgoing personality coupled with her skill set has earned her a loyal client base in the Fort Wayne community. Hall regularly donates her work for charity events to raise money for local non-profits.
